Men's groups in Melbourne

Six kinds of men's group operating in Melbourne, what each one is actually for, what it costs, and how to work out which one you need.

Start with the problem, not the group

"Men's group" covers everything from a woodworking shed to a facilitated therapy-adjacent circle to a bloke's footy tipping crew. They are not interchangeable. Work out whether you're short on friends, short on support, or short on something to do - then pick from the right column below.

The six types

Men's social clubs

What it's for
Making mates and filling the calendar
Typical cost
$15 – $60/month

A monthly membership with a hosted events calendar: pub nights, paintball, footy days, hikes, comedy, weekend trips. The point is repetition and introductions - you see the same blokes regularly and someone makes sure you're not standing alone. Good Mates Only is the Melbourne one we run, for guys 18 and over.

Men's Sheds

What it's for
Practical work, shoulder to shoulder
Typical cost
$20 – $80/year

Community workshops across almost every Melbourne council area, backed by the Australian Men's Shed Association. You build, repair and make things together. Historically skewed older, though many sheds now run evening sessions for working-age members. Excellent for men who'd rather do something than sit in a circle talking.

Men's support and peer groups

What it's for
Talking honestly about hard stuff
Typical cost
Free – $40 per session

Peer-led groups covering separation and divorce, grief, addiction, fatherhood and general mental health. Many are free and run out of community health centres or neighbourhood houses. These are not therapy, but they're often the first place men talk properly - and a good facilitator matters more than the format.

Men's circles and personal development

What it's for
Structured self-work
Typical cost
$0 – $100 per session

Facilitated groups working through emotional regulation, relationships, purpose and accountability, often with a set format and a fixed group over several weeks. Quality varies enormously - ask about the facilitator's training, the group size and the cost before committing.

Sport and physical communities

What it's for
Fitness plus built-in mateship
Typical cost
$0 – $400 per season

Local footy and cricket clubs, run crews, jiu-jitsu and boxing gyms, bouldering, cycling bunches, ocean swim groups, surf life saving. The weekly cadence does the friendship work almost by accident, which is why so many men's closest adult friendships come out of sport.

Fathers' and new-dad groups

What it's for
Support through a specific life stage
Typical cost
Free – $30

Run through maternal and child health services, neighbourhood houses and dad-specific networks. Weekend meets with kids in tow are common, which removes the biggest barrier for new fathers - needing to leave the house alone.

Choosing one that sticks

Know which problem you're solving

Loneliness, a hard season, fitness and purpose are three different problems. A social club won't replace a support group, and a support group won't fill your Saturdays.

Check the cadence

Weekly or fortnightly groups build friendships. Monthly and quarterly ones rarely do, no matter how good the individual session is.

Ask who turns up

Age range and typical attendance tell you more than the website does. A group of forty on paper can be six in the room.

Go three times before deciding

First visits are almost always awkward. Most men who quit a group quit after one session, which is exactly the session that feels worst.

Watch for lock-in

Month-to-month or casual entry is a good sign. Long contracts and expensive multi-day intensives deserve more scrutiny.
